Everyday is a restart

We are in La Rentree season. This is the annual cycle of saying good-bye to the warm and resting days of summer to embark into the busy period of the year where product launches are happening, new teams are forming and revised strategies are being put in place. Sometimes we need to press the reset button or, more commonly, there are tweaks that are made.

Regardless of what you are starting now, I am certain that there are a lot of hours spent in preparation for these moments, since we have been here before, September happens every year. Usually we replicate what we know or apply new learnings. I would highly recommend the latter if you want a different result.

Life is full of cycles and we don’t need to wait for certain times of the year in order to try something new. Let me explain, every single morning we have the opportunity to do something different. As we open our eyes and go about our days, there is a possibility of delving into new capabilities that will impact your life.  Developing new skills takes time and effort, our simple will to do it will not cut it. Change happens in small chunks and by creating a new habit we would be on our way to let a new behaviour flourish. Everyday is a restart, but we don’t need to press the reset button.

You might say that you don’t need a new habit or give up an old one and that is okay, but I doubt it. We all have received feedback throughout life, some formal like in performance reviews, some informal like when your loved one tells you to finish what you start (I get this one quite a lot). So pick one thing that you can start consciously changing.

One example I can share of a new practice I have added in my life is journaling. I started writing morning pages (I recommend reading Julia Cameron’s The Artists Way to know more about this) to gather my thoughts, eventually I joined a writing group where we sit and write together for one hour every weekday. Some of my work is only for me, and some I share with everyone like this post. So which skill would you want to start exploring today?
