How lucky I am that I get to choose where I live. Last night, the Modern Elder Academy European Alumni group were in conversation with Ryan Frederick, the wise author of ‘Right Place, Right Time’. As we delved into how deeply our chosen environments shape our identities and trajectories, a humbling realisation washed over me: the very fact that I could participate in such a conversation highlighted an extraordinary privilege that many don’t share.
The ability to choose where we liveāto thoughtfully select our neighbourhoods, communities, and even countriesāis a freedom that often goes unacknowledged. For many across the globe, the concept of choosing their environment is as foreign as the places they dream of calling home. Their lives are dictated by circumstances, economic constraints, or geopolitical realities beyond their control.
As I reflect on Frederick’s insights and the engaging conversation with my fellow group members about the profound impact of place on our well-being, I’m struck by a deep sense of gratitude. It is remarkable that I/we have the privilege to not only choose our location but also engage in meaningful discussions about such choices. I would even assume that if you were reading this here on LinkedIn, you might benefit from the freedom to choose. If so, cherish it.
What choices are you grateful for today? How might acknowledging these privileges shape the decisions you make for tomorrow?
