Looking for a new job can be daunting in regular times and I don’t need to tell you that the current job market looks more like a high seas storm. The number of hashtag#opentowork green banners in profile pictures in LinkedIn continue to be insistently high. To avoid getting tossed around or swept away it’s critical that you grab the wheel and take ownership of your career.
In this week’s post, I decided to share an exercise I use with my clients. The goal is to own the narrative as you craft what your ideal job is. Start with these 3 simple steps:
1️⃣ Write down your 5 masteries: here is the time for you to hold back on your humility and express what you are really good at;
2️⃣ List what excites you: no limits for how many items you have on your list, go deep as you explore what you want to accomplish;
3️⃣ Get down to tactics: jot down the industries you would like to work in, size of company, etc; this is the place to be as specific as you would like.
This whole exercise should not take from 60 to 90 min. I would recommend that you do it in one go, let it settle for a couple of days and revisit to check if you would remove or add anything. Share it with a mentor or someone that knows you well to check if there is something missing or if what you came up with resonates.
This exercise will remind you of what you are really good at and will help build confidence in what you can bring to the new roles you are applying to. Nothing better than taking the reins of our own careers. Good luck.
