Ray Dalio says that pain plus reflection equals progress. I wholeheartedly agree with him and the way I would say it is that we should slow down to go faster. It took me years to understand and really put it into practice.
Last week, I had the privilege to be on a panel at The Future of Commerce 2023 that THG Ingenuity puts together for their customers and prospects. The panel was hosted by Callum Skinner and my fellow panellists were Joanna Drake and Gary Neville. It was a great conversation about how to be resilient in the face of adversity. Each one of us came from completely different worlds, but as we shared our stories on how we face our challenges, there were so many similarities on how we responded to what was being demanded of us at those moments in time.
That conversation reminded me of the importance of pausing in order to create awareness of what is happening in your own life. This is always the first step. Speed is the opposite of reflection and if you don’t reflect in order to assess where you are, it is difficult to self correct. Self correction is one of the ways to prevent you from simply repeating what you have been doing.
Being on stage with them was also particularly special for me. It was the first time since I transitioned my career that I was speaking publicly as JL, the leadership coach. It was even written on my badge and it felt amazing.
